The purchase of a fine watch can be a great investment, but you need to be aware that it takes proper service and care to protect its value.

A crucial part for the maintance of a mechanical / automatic watch is the cleaning of the movement, which should be conducted at least every 10 years. Inspection of the movement is recommended every 5 years. Water resistant or water proof watches should have their case seals and gaskets inspected every 2-3 years.

Proper cleaning requires

• complete disassembly of the movement into all parts
• cleaning of all parts
• examination of every part, gear and tooth
• reassembly and lubrication
• resealing of watch case

For older watches it can be hard to find replacement parts and making the parts by hand may be necessary. The reproduction of parts requires the highest level of precision, cleanliness and concentration in order to give the movement back the precision it had when it was initially built.
